[grimoire] The Golden Compass vs. Stardust

I read these two books back-to-back. The Golden Compass is by Philip
Pullman, and Stardust by Neil Gaiman. I find Gaiman to be a hit-or-miss
kinda author and this was my first Pullman novel.

I read them back-to-back b/c I consider them to be in the same genre: young
adult/fantasy/adventure. Consequently, they both have film adaptations
coming soon. Stardust in August, and The Golden Compass in December.

I found The Golden Compass to be vastly superior. Better characters, more
fantasy elements and a multi-faceted and interesting plot. Stardust I was
kinda disappointed in. None of the main characters interested me, and I
found some of the protagonist's motivations dubious. I'd call it an average
read.

As for the film adaptations, The Golden Compass has a great amount of
potential here. I'm expecting a lot of CGI.

SPOILERS for The Golden Compass....

I'm especially interested in how they deal with the transforming daemons in
the movie. Also, everyone has a daemon in the book, and in the trailer, I
don't see them. hmmmm....
