This may seem like an off-topic read, but I wouldn't have read this book if
I hadn't heard that Peter Jackson might be fliming a movie based on it.

Gotta say that I was disappointed. A few people on the list warned me that
this book was overhyped, and they were right...

I had some problems with the characters. For one...when the story's
protagonist in heaven finally gets to be on earth for a little while (via
Ruth), what does she do?! She has sex with the boy that was her first
kiss...INSTEAD OF maybe....I don't know....CALLING OR VISITING HER FAMILY?!!
For the whole book....she is in heaven for YEARS, watching her family fall
apart and when she finally has a chance to ease some of their pain, she
decides to have sex instead?

Another issue was the mom character. She has an affair, totally ditches her
family to escape her problems, moves to California for more than a decade,
and comes back b/c her husband had a heart attack. The family and the
husband lets her off the hook WAY too easily. The only retaliation she
receives from her scorned family was a weak "fuck you" from the youngest
boy.

The first half of the book was very sad, but very good. The second half of
the book kinda drags on, and then the story's characters start to get on
your nerves and you want to throw the book in a trash can.

Anyway, next up for me is Neil Gaiman's STARDUST.

Jason
