This was book III of the "His Dark Materials" trilogy, which also included of Book I:  The Golden Compass,and Book II:  The Subtle Knife
 
Book III was a wonderful conclusion to the trilogy.  I loved all three books, but I did feel like Book II was the weakest.  The plot was a little stagnant until the last few chapters, when it really took off and got you primed and ready for Book III.
 
I miss all of the characters already.  Highly recommended.

Ok, so I hear that in the film version of The Golden Compass, they are excluding the portion about Dust.  This is a mistake.  It totally takes the guts out of the story, and it will also damage the storylines of the next two movies if they plan on doing those too.  There are also a bit of anti-religion sentiments in there, which might not go over well for US audiences.  Maybe that's why they took Dust out?
