Perhaps your expectations were raised too high by the overwhelming  
amount of positive reviews.  I found it to be well worthy of that  
praise--the best horror novel I read all year.  Even knowing the bleak  
end these characters would suffer beforehand because it's based on  
actual events, I thought he did a great job making it suspenseful.
