From mingee at swbell.net Mon Aug 2 10:53:11 2010 From: mingee at swbell.net (Robert Mingee) Date: Mon, 02 Aug 2010 14:53:11 -0000 Subject: [grimoire] DWELLER**Jeff Strand In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <537302.88628.qm@web81405.mail.mud.yahoo.com> Wow, it's gotten really quiet in here. I had made a commitment to myself to catch up on mailing lists and be more active this year, but until now my job was pretty much preventing that from happening. I'm hoping now I'm finally past that -- hopefully Jason hasn't given up and moved on. I'm in the middle of this right now, and LOVING it. Like you, I really enjoyed "Presure" as well. Have you read any of his Andrew Mayhem books? I have a digital copy of the first one (got a Nook last week, loving it so far!) but haven't read it yet. I also enjoyed "Benjamin's Parasite", though there was obviously less substance there than Pressure and Dweller. But I like that kind of book as well, and it sounds like the Mayhem books are more along those lines. -- robert p.s. - Interesting bit of trivia, I was mistaken for Jeff Strand in the dealer room at World Horror in SF a few years back. The guy swore I looked just like him, and after meeting him at that con, I just didn't see it. It was somewhat of an insult to Jeff, actually :-). ________________________________ From: Jason Cavallaro To: grimoire at cavesofice.org; horror at listserv.indiana.edu; horrorlit at yahoogroups.com; laymon at yahoogroups.com Sent: Wed, April 28, 2010 10:59:21 PM Subject: [grimoire] DWELLER**Jeff Strand This one is a gem. Jeff Strand continues to amaze me. He has written what I consider one of the greatest books I've ever read, "Pressure." DWELLER is a MUST read. I don't want to give anything away, but it's about a boy that meets a monster in the woods near his home. It has everything, coming-of-age story, gore, a monster, great chracters...I loved it Jason now reading Steve Alten's Trench ________________________________ Hotmail has tools for the New Busy. No sophmore slump here! Fully realized characters, nice little murder mystery packed in there, and superb writing. I really liked it. Thanks to my friend Casey for suggesting it. I have strayed away from science fiction literature after my first attempt with Hebert's DUNE. Don't get me wrong, I thought DUNE was masterfully written, and showed Hebert's genuis....BUT...I thought it was a tough read; maybe too tough at the time for me to enjoy fully. In any case, ENDER'S GAME was a great book. It didn't show its full genius until the last few pages. A great coming-of-age story, that I'd recommend any child to read. The original three sequels were also very good, but did not quite live up to the first in my opinion. DUNE is also a great SF novel, one I had difficulty with too at first. My favorite SF books of all time are Dan Simmons' HYPERION & ENDYMION books. Greg > > GREAT BOOK. Thanks to my friend Casey for suggesting it.
